Container Terminal in China with Minimal Human Intervention

Yangshan Phase IV (YSH4) is the largest and most fully automated container terminal in the world, where human involvement is required only for the final operational steps. Construction began in 2014, and the terminal officially opened in December 2017. It is located on the Yangshan Islands, southeast of Shanghai, covering an area of 2.23 million square meters. Its container handling capacity reaches 6.3 million TEU per year.

Terminal operations are fully automated, controlling the entire operational chain: container loading and unloading, transportation, and storage.

The system uses AI algorithms to plan optimal routes and work schedules. Real-time data analysis allows the terminal to adapt operations based on changes in cargo volume. The site also features automatically guided electric vehicles, which navigate precisely and safely with the help of GPS, laser scanners, and sensors.

Yangshan Phase IV represents a symbol of China’s technological advancement in maritime logistics and plays a crucial role in strengthening Shanghai’s position as a global maritime hub.
