In 2024, 55,000 TEUs of containers were transported from China to the European Union via the Middle Corridor, accounting for nearly 70% of its current capacity of 80,000 TEUs.
The growth in containerized shipments highlights both the corridor's promising potential and the urgent need for infrastructure development. In 2024, trade between China and the EU reached $786 billion, surpassing the trade volume between China and the United States by $100 billion.
Even in the Russian media, which had previously downplayed the corridor, positive assessments of the Middle Corridor have recently emerged, recognizing it as a competitive alternative route.
The stability and growth potential of the Middle Corridor is supported by research: projections suggest that by 2027, its capacity could increase from 6 to 10 million tons, and with infrastructure development around the Caspian Sea, it will be possible to handle up to 80,000 TEUs.
As a result, overland container shipments from China to the European Union are becoming a key route within the Middle Corridor.
