Azerbaijan Becomes a Key Player in the Middle Corridor - New Opportunities for Georgia

Tensions between Azerbaijan and Russia are generating certain positive outcomes for countries along the Middle Corridor, including Georgia. The weakening of Russia’s influence in the region and the strengthening of Azerbaijan’s role align closely with Georgia’s strategic interests.

In recent years, Azerbaijan’s geopolitical and economic importance has significantly increased, driven by:

  • Large-scale logistics projects,
  • Development of transport infrastructure, and
  • A multi-vector foreign policy approach.

Russia’s shift in focus toward the Trans-Afghan route has encouraged the EU to seek alternatives, boosting interest in the Middle Corridor. This enhances Georgia’s potential to attract more freight traffic through its territory.

A critical part of this dynamic is the growing Azerbaijan–China partnership.
In April 2025, the two countries signed several strategic agreements aimed at:

  • Increasing the number of block trains,
  • Expanding container shipments,
  • Synchronizing digital platforms, and
  • Establishing a unified tariff policy.

In just the first half of 2025, 199 block trains and 19,700 TEUs were shipped from China to Azerbaijan - nearly double the volume from the previous year.

Significant growth is also being recorded on the Baku–Tbilisi–Kars railway line, further strengthening Georgia’s role as a logistics hub.

In conclusion Azerbaijan is actively seeking alternatives to Russian-controlled transport routes. In this context, the middle corridor, including the route through Georgia, is emerging as a strategic priority. This development offers a real opportunity for Georgia to attract additional freight flows and enhance its original significance.
